Atticus Finch

Atticus Finch, the lawyer of Tom Robinson, is a good enough man. After losing his wife, Atticus raised his two children, Jeremy and Jean Louise Finch, by himself- not that he did a good job. Jean Louise- or as he calls her- “Scout” runs around in overalls, constantly fighting with the other children. Lord help that child, who knows what will happen to her once she’s grown? Jeremy, on the other hand, is a decent young man. But if Atticus continues to let those two run around like wild geese, they’ll be working at the O.K. Cafe before you can count to ten! But forget the children, what about Atticus?
From what I have seen and heard, Atticus seems to be a good enough man. He goes to Church every Sunday and he works as a lawyer for a living. But that’s not to say he doesn’t make mistakes! As soon as he took up Tom Robinson’s trial, he had all of Maycomb against him. I knew from the very beginning Finch wouldn’t win, and frankly I think he did too. Regardless, he thought he was doing the right thing, all the while. He’s not a bad man, just mistaken. He thought he was doing the right thing, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out. Sometimes the consequences of such mistakes are perilous. One day, as Atticus was just exiting the post office, that Ewell man approached him. After Ewell cursed him and spat on him, he threatened, “Why, you dirty little #%-, how dare you make a fool outta me!?! I’ll get you, if its the last thing I do! I will get you!” I heard the whole thing with my own two ears! I couldn’t believe what was coming out of that man’s mouth, but Atticus? Atticus didn’t bat an eye. He simply took out his handkerchief, wiped his face, and stood there. He just stood there, letting that foul man call him names wild horses couldn’t make me repeat! Atticus did not put up a fight, he was just too old for it all. But you have to hand it to him, Atticus Finch could be right dry sometimes. |
