A Glimpse of the World Through Our Eyes
By: Braxton Bragg Underwood June 1, 1933
It is the 1930’s. The stock market crashed, none of us have jobs, and those who do can barely make ends meet. Our living standards have gone down drastically from the Roarin’ 20’s. We are in the Great Depression. FOOD is cheap. New potatoes for 21 cents/10 pounds? 100 pounds of sugar for 5 bucks? There are kids on the street selling eggs for a few cents all over the country. It makes you wonder when we are going to get out of this mess. |
LIQUOR fines are being administered from states and some have collected over $60,000. We are here barely making ends meet and we are still being fined? This is the reason the Great Depression is not near its end. Is the government helping or hurting us?
CARS, a luxury, are also suffering. People are too poor to buy cars that sell for high prices so Chevrolet lowered their price to $495; but even that is unaffordable. COLLEGE hopefuls are being disappointed everyday. They attend college with the confidence that they will get a job, but as they graduate, they find that the fronts of stores are armed with the sign, “Not Employing” JOBS are scarce. Those who have jobs are in the jeopardy of losing them if times get worse. With most people eating out of the soup kitchen for free, they are going to go out of business-where are they going to get their money from? It does not grow on trees! There are a lot of problems in our country right now but things can’t be that bad if the newspapers are still in business. They offer hope to people in a time of despair and if our opinions are heard in the newspaper, the government will react! |
