"One Shot Finch" Shoots Mad Dog
By: Braxton Bragg Underwood (Mona) February 5, 1935
Early Saturday morning, much of Maycomb County was awakened by Miss Calpurnia hollering about there being a mad dog. The townsfolks reported hearing knocking on their doors and muffled words.
Miss Maudie tells us that she had seen the whole incident. “Atticus and Heck Tate fussed for quite awhile before Mr. Finch finally took the gun and shot the approaching dog, revealed to be old Tim Johnson. The dog was walking slowly, as if in a trance, not even being able to stay in a straight line. Then, I saw Atticus take off his glasses and I watched them crack. Soon afterwards, he raised his gun and shot old Tim Johnson. He was a little to the right in his aim, of course.” Miss Maudie says, “I had spoken to Jean Louise Finch afterwards and told her the story of her father being upheld as ‘Ol’ One Shot.’ That oughtta change her and Jeremy’s tone!” This was certainly just a small event, but it had awakened the neighborhood. It had allowed the townspeople to all gather inside their houses to watch Atticus Finch make perhaps his last shot. Tim Robinson died without seeing it coming. He has been sacrificed for the well-being of the society. |
