Ewell Finds and Loses a Job Within a Matter of Days
By Braxton Bragg Underwood October 15, 1935
Mr. Robert Ewell recently got job at the WPA (Works Progress Administration) but lost it after just a few days. He was fired for laziness. Therefore, he went back to his usual routine of making trips to the welfare office for his weekly check.
A lady who works at the welfare office, Ruth Jones, claims that Mr. Ewell always comes to the office in a bad mood, grumbling about how the people who ran the town wouldn’t let him make a living. “Just earlier today, when Mr. Ewell claimed to pick up his check, he said right out loud that Atticus is the reason for him losing his job,” according to Miss. Ruth. “The nerve that Ewell has to say such a thing is simply outrageous! I was so upset that I went down to Atticus’s office to tell him personally.” Later, we asked Atticus about what he had to say about the situation. “Oh I just told Miss Ruth Jones not to fret one bit. Mr. Ewell knows where my office is if he would like to discuss how I supposedly took his job away from him,” Atticus says. It is very uncommon that people are fired from the WPA for laziness. However, Robert Ewell still managed to lose his job this way. His accomplishment of getting a real job only lasted a few days until he was fired and also soon forgotten. |
