The Refugee
By: Braxton Bragg Underwood August 15, 1935
Mr. Charles Baker Harris was found a dirty mess in the Finches home this past Tuesday. “Dill” comes to Maycomb County every summer to stay with Miss Rachel Haverford, except for the summer of 1934, and lives in Meridian, Mississippi for the rest of the year. He stole thirteen dollars from his mother and took a train to Maycomb Junction. The child walked ten to eleven miles to the town, but latched onto a cotton wagon for the rest of the way to Maycomb.
He came to his best friends’ house, the Finches. He went inside and hid under Miss Jean Louise Finch’s bed for two hours before he was found. He was finally spotted when Miss Finch was heading for bed. Mr. Finch contacted Ms. Haverford and it was settled that Charles would stay a little longer with us in Maycomb County. |
