Theft at Miss Sarah "Tutti" and Miss Frances "Frutti" Barber's Home
By: Braxtong Bragg Underwood November 7, 1944
This year, on Halloween night, someone broke into the Barber home and took all of the furniture inside. "I heard 'em! Heard 'em drive a truck up to the door! Stomped around like horses. They're in New Orleans by now!" Miss Frutti woke up all of her neighbors the next morning at dawn with these cries. Miss Tutti had suspicions that fur sellers that came through Maycomb a couple days prior had something to do with their missing furniture.
Heck Tate was called in. He surveyed the remains and thought the caper was local. Miss Tutti pressed for the use of bloodhounds, so Mr. Tate rounded up the dogs. He let them loose but they would run back to the Barber house and bark at the cellar door. By noon on November 1, Heck Tate solved the case. Some children waited until Miss Tutti and Frutti were asleep and crept into their living room. They moved the furniture into the Barber's cellar. Everything of the Barbers' was found. |
